The Gregg Gelb Jazz Quartet comes to Oriental Friday November 13, 2009. Saxophonist, clarinetist, arranger, and bandleader Gregg Gelb hails from New York, and discovered his love for jazz in college upon hearing Miles Davis’s “Kind of Blue,” featuring John Coltrane, “Cannonball” Adderley, and Bill Evans. Gregg began to concentrate on practicing and listening to jazz and joined a resort jazz band after his sophomore year, even purchasing a sax from someone at the hotel. Gregg then transferred to Berklee College of Music in 1974 and was awarded his Bachelor of Music in 1979. He went on to earn his Masters of Music from the N.C. School of the Arts and his doctorate from UNC-Greensboro. Gregg is also a recipient of the NC Arts Council Jazz Composers Fellowship. Owen Cordle, music critic for the Raleigh News & Observer, writes, “Saxophonist Gregg Gelb may have been the busiest jazz musician in central North Carolina for the last 20 years. As leader of the Gregg Gelb Swing Band, director of the Heart of Carolina Jazz Orchestra, founding member of the NC Jazz Repertory Orchestra, jazz educator, and leader of numerous ad-hoc small groups, Gelb is, by example, an advocate for the music.”
